Today’s topic of discussion is, ‘What is your why?’. The trumpet has sounded and the alarms have rung out. A call to action has been sent out to the masses. Today we can turn on our television or pick up our mobile devices and see in real time, second by second what is happening. Many of us have chosen to no longer stand idly by, but have taken on the challenge to march, whether physically or metaphorically, for reform of the legislative process and the principles of basic human rights for Black people. As I too am one of those that has been energized and renewed to be part of the change, I had to as myself, ‘What is my why?’. What is my motivation to continue to pursue this race long after the videos are less frequent and the television crews have moved on to other things? Plain and simple my whys are named Randall and Robby. I know that I cannot rest on my laurels knowing that I have two sons that will be released into this savage world. I cannot turn them loose without knowing that I have done everything in my power to force a change to happen.
So now that you know my why, what is yours? Will you continue this fight because you know that fundamentally there are egregious injustices being directed toward people of color? Is you why rooted in being part of the popular crowd, because Black Lives Matter is trending on Twitter? To companies and corporations, celebrities and white athletes, is you why rooted in keeping a fanbase and making sure there isn’t a blip to your bottom line? To those that are in this battle with us with the purest of intentions and heartfelt desire to move this country forward, we thank you. It is time to keep going, we cannot slow down or wane and grow weary. The opportunity is here and now and we must strike while the iron is hot. I caution you to stay alert and hyper vigilant to recognize those whose why comes from a place of love and humanity as opposed to those whose interests are a fleeting fad and will move on to the next hashtag when the opportunity comes. There will be wolves in sheep clothing; however we cannot become discouraged or distracted. We know that our why will be the fuel in our tanks and the momentum that will continue to propel us forward. I make a promise to all that are in this fight with me, I will press on even when it seems dark and hopeless. I will continue to educate anyone and everyone that will listen. I will not stand idly by and allow injustices or inhumanity to occur in my presence. I will continue to all these things because I know my why. When I look into their eyes, that will motivate me to live to fight another day. So please take some time to self reflect and discover your why. Your why that is not based upon selfish motivation or monetary gain, but the why that is rooted in the Christ within you. So discover your why and it will be clear that your presence will be recognized by the sheep as being part of the fold and not a wolf disguised as one of us.
